Historic Team Silver for Gymnasts

July 30, 2014

It is a historic day for Gymnastics in Scotland, as the Men’s Artistic team of Liam Davie, Adam Cox, Daniel Keatings, Daniel Purvis and Frank Baines claimed Scotland’s first ever team medal in gymnastics at a Commonwealth Games, taking Silver in front of a packed Hydro arena.
In previous Commonwealth Games Scottish Gymnasts had only claimed Individual medals, so the team medal is a landmark moment for Team Scotland.
Heading into the final day of competition, the Scottish Men sat in 2nd place. Gallant displays and excellent routines on Parallel Bars, High Bar and Vault from the Scottish Men was still not enough to topple their fierce rivals England, leaving Scotland to claim Silver with a score of 257.603.
On the team’s success Frank Baines said, “It feels amazing, the crowd were behind us all the way. We have got a Silver medal, which is great. First ever medal for Scotland in a team event, which is amazing.”
Adam Cox said, “Being a part of this team is an absolute honour. The boys went out there and did me proud. I really enjoyed it, the atmosphere was buzzing, the crowd were incredible, I absolutely loved it. One of the best experiences of my life, without a doubt.”
City of Glasgow teammate Liam Davie continued, “Just to be here in a silver medal winning team, first time in history is just amazing, and I am glad to be here with one of the team mates from my club.”
Scott Harper Chair of Scottish Gymnastics said, “Today we have witnessed a historic moment for Gymnastics in Scotland, the winning of Scotland’s first ever team medal in Gymnastics at a Commonwealth Games. It is fitting that this was achieved in Scotland, in front of a home crowd.”
In the women’s competition the team of Emma White, Amy Reagan, Cara Kennedy, Carly Smith and Erin McLachlan finished 5th with a score of 151.595.
