Team Scotland has announced a 39-strong athletics team to compete at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, bringing together some of Scotland’s biggest track and field stars and a host of exciting debutants for a home Games.
The announcement confirms the selection of a further 28 athletes to the squad following the pre-selection of Jake Wightman, Neil Gourley and Megan Keith last year and eight para-athletes, including Paralympic champion and world record holder Ben Sandilands last month.
The team reflects a mix of established performers and rising stars and includes 11 athletes who won medals at the British Championships in Birmingham last weekend.
Those added to the team include Eilish McColgan (10,000m) and hammer thrower Chris Bennett who will compete in their fourth Games, as will pre-selected Jake Wightman (Mile). Distance runner Andrew Butchart (5000m/10,000m) will make his second Commonwealth Games appearance while Laura Muir (5000m) and Nick Percy (Discus) compete at their third.
Newly-crowned British champions Sarah Calvert (Mile) and long jumper Stephen Mackenzie, who sailed out to a new Scottish record of 8.15m last weekend to clinch the title, will make their Games debut.
Decathlete Callum Newby has also set new Scottish record figures this summer and there will be a strong Scottish presence in the multi-events with fellow decathlete Joel McFarlane and heptathlete Allie Routledge also selected. Hammer thrower Angela McAuslan-Kelly is set to make her Games debut having gone third on the Scottish all-time list, and pole vaulter Jax Thoirs will compete at a second Games, 12 years after his first at Glasgow 2014.
There will be full representation in the Commonwealth Mile with world and Olympic medallist Josh Kerr joining Jake Wightman and Neil Gourley in the men’s event, and Jemma Reekie and Erin Wallace joining Sarah Calvert in the women’s.
Team Scotland will field both Mixed 4x400m and Women’s 4x100m relay teams, following extra places made available to Team Scotland specifically for these events. Rebecca Grieve and Bradley Francis are included for the Mixed 4x400m alongside individual 400m runners Brodie Young and Nicole Yeargin. Georgina Adam is included in both Mixed 4x400m and Women’s 4x100m relay squads. Alisha Rees, Lucy Fraser and Kaya Slater will join her in the latter, making a strong team, alongside individual 200m runner Alyson Bell.
Team Scotland Chef de Mission, Elinor Middlemiss said “A huge congratulations to all the track and field athletes selected to compete in Glasgow this summer. It’s fantastic to see such a strong team named for the Games – a team which has a real mix of strength, depth and experience.
“Several of these athletes competed at Glasgow 2014 and will be able to impart that experience to the rest of the team. I’m confident that all selected will rise to the occasion of a home Games and do Team Scotland proud.”
