Scotland’s most beloved thistle is back where he belongs. Team Scotland is thrilled to announce that Clyde, the cheeky, purple-haired mascot who captured the hearts of a nation during the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, will return as the official Team Scotland mascot for Glasgow 2026.
Twelve years on from the summer that stopped Scotland in its tracks, Clyde’s iconic Usain Bolt poses and Glaswegian spirit made him one of the most recognisable sporting mascots in Commonwealth Games history. His face appeared throughout the 2014 Games, where he met thousands of schoolchildren, athletes, and even the Duchess of Cambridge. Twenty-five life-size fibreglass statues of the cartoon thistle were also spread across Glasgow as part of Clyde’s Trail to celebrate the mascot and Games. Now, as Glasgow prepares to welcome the Commonwealth once more, Clyde is lacing up – this time, to cheer on Team Scotland.
As well as cheering on Team Scotland’s athletes across the city, Clyde will be hosting The Clyde Club at Team Scotland House, located at The Corinthian Club in Glasgow. Open to everyone from 21 July – 2 August, it will be the place to watch the Games, meet Clyde himself, meet athletes and enjoy a summer of family-friendly fun and activities in the heart of Glasgow.
No stranger to the away fixture, Clyde carried Scotland’s colours to the Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022 – proving that his passion for Team Scotland travels as well as any athlete on the roster. But there is something undeniably special about coming home. With the Commonwealth Games returning to Glasgow this summer, and Finnie being appointed as the official mascot Glasgow 2026, Clyde will lead Team Scotland’s charge on home soil, bringing that unmistakable mix of Glaswegian warmth and competitive fire.
Clyde said: ”Aw, it’s good to be home. Glasgow, I’ve missed you. And I have to say, have you seen Finnie? A unicorn with a traffic cone for a horn? That is absolutely class. I cannot wait to hang out with her. But first things first, I’ll be at Team Scotland House all summer long and I want to see every single one of you there. Come watch the Games, come say hello, bring the weans. The Clyde Club is open to all and trust me, we’re going to have the best time. Come on Team Scotland!”
Elinor Middlemiss, Team Scotland’s Chef de Mission, added: “Clyde isn’t just a mascot, he’s part of Scotland’s sporting story. It’s so exciting to have such a loved member of the team returning to Glasgow and he’ll be a great supporter for Team Scotland.”
