Sprinters Pete Mitchell and Niall Monks have been added to Team Scotland’s track cycling squad for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, completing the lineup in the velodrome for the host nation.  

For Mitchell, a veteran of both elite sprint cycling and para cycling as a tandem pilot, it’s a remarkable comeback to the top level. His long-term partnership as pilot for Neil Fachie saw the pair win six UCI Para-cycling World Championship titles, a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Paralympics and become the first tandem pairing to break the one-minute barrier for the kilometre time trial, setting a world record in the process.  

Mitchell also took two Commonwealth Games silver medals with James Ball at the 2018 Commonwealth Games for Team England. In 2021 he stepped away from elite cycling to focus on his coaching business but returned to high level training in the summer of 2023 and won his first senior individual national sprint title at the 2024 British National Track Championships. 

Set to make his Commonwealth Games debut, Monks has enjoyed breakthrough success in recent seasons, claiming silver medals in both the British National Kilo Championship and the British National Keirin Championship in 2024. In 2025, he secured his first national title by winning the British National Team Sprint Championship alongside fellow Team Scotland rider Lyall Craig, producing a standout performance despite competing with a fractured elbow.  

Monks was also part of the Glasgow Track Racing Club squad that holds the current Scottish All-Comers National Team Sprint (750m) record with a time of 46.717 seconds set in 2019. 

The pair will strengthen Team Scotland’s track cycling team, and will also enable Scotland to contest the Men’s Team Sprint.
