About Us

Vision

Our vision is twofold:

  • CGS becomes one of the most sustainable sporting organisations in Scotland;
  • CGS uses its extensive range of relationships with other organisations to initiate sustainability conversations within the wider sporting community.

Where we can make a difference

There are four areas we will focus on in working towards delivery of this vision:

We will promote good health and well-being, placing athlete and staff well-being at the forefront of our activity and showcasing sporting activity and achievement to celebrate and promote physical exercise.

We will actively work to reduce inequalities, supporting communities both locally and across the Commonwealth and be a welcoming and diverse organisation.

We will take positive action to support our climate, reducing our carbon footprint and educating our member sports and athletes to encourage them to use their platforms to inspire action.

We will collaborate with other organisations in delivering our sustainability policy, seeking to prompt sustainability conversations in the sporting and wider community.

Our Athletes

Our athletes are inspirational in and out of sporting performance, and we encourage them to use their platform in a positive manner.

Many of our athletes are passionate about the environment and encouraging a more sustainable lifestyle. Our Sustainability Captains, Jamie Farndale of Rugby 7s and Fiona Burnet of Hockey, are two examples of such athletes.

Jamie is our 7s captain, and also holds the role of Scottish Rugby’s Sustainability Ambassador. He is enrolled on a Masters course on sustainability at Cambridge University, with the aim of implementing his learnings in sport locally, nationally and internationally.

“It’s not enough for modern sports fans that your team wins; modern fans want to support teams that have purpose and who take responsibility for this.”

Fiona Burnet is a UK Parliamentary Aide on top of her career as a hockey star, and is an EcoAthlete Champion. The outdoors has always been a part of her life, but it wasn’t until university that climate change and its impacts really clicked.

“I grew up in Shandon, a tiny hamlet on the west coast of Scotland, and so always loved nature. But it was the modules on sustainability and the impacts of climate change that really rekindled my interest.”
