Weightlifting has been included in the Commonwealth Games programme at every Games since 1950.

Para-Sport Powerlifting was integrated into the Commonwealth Games in Manchester 2002 and has featured ever since. Events for women were first introduced in 2002.

Weightlifting has featured at the Commonwealth Youth Games on four occasions; Edinburgh 2000, Bendigo 2004, Pune 2008 and Samoa 2015.

The Weightlifting competition is held under the rules of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF). The Powerlifting events are for Para-Sport athletes are held in accordance with the rules of International Paralympic Committee.

Philip Caira is Scotland's most successful weightlifter with two gold medals, won in 1958 and 1962.

Peter Kirkbride won gold for Scotland at the 2004 Youth Games and went onto win Commonwealth Games silver at Delhi 2010.

Between 1990 and 2002 separate medals were awarded for the Snatch, the Clean and Jerk and for combined total. Since 2006 medals have only been awarded for combined total.
