More Medal Joy for Judo

July 27, 2014

Scotland finished the three-day Judo competition on a high, with a further five medals (3 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze) at the SECC.

Team Scotland flag bearer Euan Burton (-100kg) picked up Gold in his final competitive match in an evening that saw Judo become Scotland’s most successful ever sport at a Games. With a total of 6 Gold, 2 Silver and 5 Bronze, Scottish Judokas have overtaken the Aquatics team from Melbourne in the medal stakes with a total of 13, including the same number of Gold.

Talking about their success, Burton said: “I’m very proud, I’ve played my part as an athlete and I’ve been on the coaching staff for two years so I’m very, very proud of the players on the team and it’s credit, not just to the players – of course they’re the ones who do all the hard work, and without them doing the hard work no-one gets any medals – but the people behind them, the coaches, the physiologists, the physio, the strength and conditioning guys, all of the staff at JudoScotland all those people help to make what happened this week happen. Thirteen medals out of fourteen athletes is a pretty good return.
“Hopefully we get more and more kids through the door now wanting to be the next Rennicks sisters or the next Sarah Clark, some of them might even want to be the next Euan Burton.”
Also competing last night, Sarah Adlington (+78kg) and Chris Sherrington (+100kg) added Gold to Scotland’s total, while Matt Purssey and Andy Burns won Silver and Bronze respectively in the -90kg category.

Team Scotland Chef de Mission, Jon Doig said: “Many congratulations to Judo on becoming Team Scotland’s most successful sport at a single Games, with six Gold, two Silver and five Bronze, taking over the mantle from Swimming.

“Team Scotland has had an outstanding first three days of competition, winning an unprecedented 25 medals with 11 Gold, 6 Silver and 8 Bronze.

“At 11 Gold we have already equalled our best Commonwealth Games performance ever and are well on track at this stage to win our most medals ever.

“Our athletes have been truly inspired by the magnificent home support and I am confident that there are many more athletes yet to contribute to an outstanding team performance, determined to make Scotland proud.”
