Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Pool

August 8, 2023

Matthew Ward claimed his second and third medals of Trinbago 2023 with 50m Backstroke gold and 100m Freestyle silver while Evan Davidson completed the set for Team Scotland with 400m Individual Medley bronze on a fantastic Day 3 in the pool.

Evan Davidson set the tone, up first in a packed night of finals in the 400m IM. He swam superbly, dropping 5 seconds from his heat time to take bronze, his first medal of the Games. Next up were the 50m Backstroke events with Holly McGill taking 5th place in a season’s best before Matthew Ward stormed down the pool to gold and a new Commonwealth Youth games record of 25.52 seconds. Dean Fearn, gold medallist in yesterday’s 50m Fly, took fourth place.

In the 100m Freestyle, Laurie Devine put in a strong race, improving from qualifying in 7th place to finish 6th. Then, just 20 minutes after his 50m Backstroke gold, Matthew was back in action, adding 100m Freestyle silver to take his Games tally to three. In the same race Stefan Krawiec improved on his qualifying performance to finish 5th.

The night finished with the Mixed 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay where Matthew Ward, Evan Davidson, Drew McKenzie and Laurie Devine finished just outside the medals in 4th.

All eight swimmers are in action tomorrow with heats starting at 10am (3pm UK).
