Fencing

Fencing is an optional sport on the Commonwealth Games programme and was first featured at the 1950 Games in Auckland, New Zealand. It was included at every Games over a 20 year period to 1970, which was the sport’s last Commonwealth Games appearance to date. As a Commonwealth Games Federation Recognised Sport, Commonwealth Fencing Championships have been held every four years, in the same year as the Commonwealth Games.

The three disciplines within Fencing are the Foil, the Epée, and the Sabre, with athletes competing in each discipline for team and individual medals. Between 1950 and 1970, men competed in all three disciplines and women only in the Foil at the Commonwealth Games.

Fencing was also included in the inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games held in Edinburgh in 2000 with Scotland winning four medals.

All international Fencing events are conducted according to the rules of the Fédération Internationale d’Escrime (FIE).
