In the week that saw 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Stephen Simmons turn pro, Amateur Boxing Scotland was already planning for success in Glasgow in three and a half year’s time.
Scotland’s youth and junior boxers ended the Home International Series with a win at Meadowbank over a strong Northern Ireland selection.
David Burrel, Andrew Tham, Aidan McGlynn, Reece McFadden, Sam Ball, Scott Brown and Mark McKeown won their bouts to forge a 7-6 Scotland lead.
In the final bout, Commonwealth Games silver medallist Josh Taylor beat seven-time Irish champion James Fryers to seal the victory 8-6.
Earlier in the series, Scotland beat Sweden and Wales but lost to England.
Having won gold, silver and bronze for Team Scotland at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, Amateur Boxing Scotland organised the Series to try to develop young boxers who could represent the country at the Glasgow 2014 Games.

Scotland’s Jocelyn Rae has been called up for Fed Cup duty by Great Britain following the withdrawal of the injured Laura Robson.
The 6ft 2in 19-year-old won gold for Team Scotland with Colin Fleming in the mixed doubles competition at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi in an epic final, beating the Australian top seeds.
Great Britain takes on Israel in a Euro/Africa Group I tie in Eilat over the weekend of 5-6 February. The team will now comprise of Elena Baltacha, Anne Keothavong, Heather Watson and Nottinghamshire based Rae.
“This is a great opportunity for Jocelyn,” said GB’s Fed Cup team captain, Nigel Sears. “We’re looking forward to welcoming her into the team and to getting our Fed Cup campaign under way.”
GB, alongside 14 other nations, is vying to take the top two spots and progress to the World Group II play-offs in April.
Rae is currently 16th in the Lawn Tennis Association’s female rankings.
With less than nine months to go until the next Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man (7-13 September 2011), Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) and scottishathletics have jointly agreed and published the athletics selection policy. This includes the performance standards to be reached for athletes to be eligible for nomination for Youth Team Scotland.
Of the 43 places allocated to Scotland for the Youth Games, six will be for athletics although more may be available should other countries not take up their allocation. Events included in the three day track and field programme are: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 2000m Steeple Chase, 110m hurdles (M), 100m hurdles (W), 400m hurdles, 10km walk (M), 5km walk (W), 4 x 100m relay, high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot put, discus, javelin and hammer. There will be a maximum of two entries per event, and one entry per relay. The eligible age category for athletics is the IAAF’s Youth age category: boys and girls 16 – 17 years of age (athletes born in 1994 & 1995).
For athletics the selection period will run from 1 April to 31 July 2011. Athletes seeking selection must compete in either Scottish U18 or U20 outdoor Track & Field Championships (30/31 July 2011) and the UK U20 Championships (25/26 June 2011), unless there is a very good reason not to. An athlete finishing first placed eligible Scot in the Scottish Outdoor U18/U20 Championships will be nominated for selection providing they have achieved the minimum nomination standard. Where more than two athletes attain the nomination standard for the same event, head-to-head results and championship performances will be considered.
Where more athletes achieve the standard than there are overall places available, scottishathletics will nominate athletes in order of priority, based on a range of published criteria including a performance points system which will consider performances at World Youth Championships (6 – 10 July 2011), UK U20 Championships (25 – 26 June 2011) and the Scottish U18/U20 Championships (30 – 31 July 2011).
Vicky Strange, General Team Manager for Youth Team Scotland at the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games said: “With the start of the athletics season fast approaching, we are delighted to be able to publish the performance standards required to be considered for Youth Team Scotland in the Isle of Man. This will be a great development opportunity for these young athletes and for most of them it will be their first taste of a multi-sport international competition.
“We have a great track record of athletes who are successful in the Youth Games going on to represent Team Scotland in the main Games and I am sure this year will be no exception. We certainly expect to see some of them compete in Glasgow in 2014, with others making it in 2018 and beyond.”
Darren Ritchie, Athletics Team Leader for 2011 said: “The Commonwealth Youth Games is a great opportunity for our developing athletes to experience a multi-sport competition. I look forward to seeing the athletes compete through the season, rising to the challenge with the aim to put on a Scotland vest and compete against the other Commonwealth nations in 232 days time.”

Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) announced today the general team management appointed for the next Commonwealth Youth Games in the Isle of Man which will be held 7 to 13 September 2011.

The Isle of Man Youth Games will be the fourth since the inaugural Games held in Scotland in 2000. There is a maximum of 1000 athlete places available for the Youth Games, so for the Isle of Man places have been allocated to all Commonwealth nations on a pro rata basis of their athlete numbers in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Scotland has been allocated 43 places, including a Rugby 7s squad. The sports which will compete in the Isle of Man are: Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics, Swimming and Rugby 7s. The age of athletes will range from 14 – 18 yrs (depending on the sport) and each sport is currently working with CGS to confirm selection policies, with the standards to be reached next year to gain a place on the team.
The sport team leaders and coaches will be appointed early in 2011.
Congratulating the team management, Jon Doig CGS Chief Executive said: “We were extremely impressed with the number and quality of applicants for these posts. We had a difficult job, but we are confident we have selected a strong, experienced team which will also give a number of people new to Commonwealth Games an important development opportunity.
General Team Manager, Vicky Strange added: “I am delighted to welcome them all to Youth Team Scotland and I am really looking forward to working with them over the coming months. It is now full steam ahead, as we focus on having a well prepared team ready to compete with distinction at the Youth Games in the Isle of Man in September.”

Also shortlisted were: Hannah Miley, Jon Hammond and Robbie Renwick for Sports Personality of the Year; Jen McIntosh for Amateur Performance of the Year, Sean Fraser for the Disability Award; Donald McIntosh and Patrick Miley for Coach of the Year.
It was great to see so many of our Commonwealth Games stars recognised at this prestigious event.
Four British Olympic hopefuls, including Scottish weightlifter Peter Kirkbride, have been awarded Olympic Solidarity Athlete Scholarships by the International Olympic Committee to help them in their ambition to compete for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Peter Kirkbride will receive £1,000 financial support towards his training and preparation for Olympic participation. He also attended a workshop at the British Olympic Association (BOA) Headquarters in London last week where BOA Chief Executive and Team GB Chef de Mission Andy Hunt and BOA Director of Sport Clive Woodward spoke with him about how to make the most of his Scholarship award and the importance of competing in line with the Olympic Values of Friendship, Excellence and Respect.
Peter had shown his potential by winning a silver medal in the 94kg category at the recent Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
Andy Hunt, BOA Chief Executive and Team GB Chef de Mission said:
“The Olympic Solidarity funding is a very welcome boost to the athletes concerned and will help to ensure that they have access to the necessary training and preparation on their journey to 2012. In the current financial climate, every little helps and we are pleased that the International Olympic Committee has agreed with our recommendation for these athletes to receive support.”
Work has now begun on the Kelvingrove Bowls Centre, which will host the Lawn Bowls competition at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
The centre is located immediately adjacent to the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, and close to the University of Glasgow. All five bowling greens will be upgraded to international standard for use during the Games for competition, warm-up and training. Works will include the installation of a new drainage system, the complete reconstruction of greens and ditches incorporating a new automated irrigation scheme and there will be seating for around 2,500 spectators.
Once complete, the new bowling venue will be among the finest in Scotland.
A project to deliver a new pavilion to meet the legacy requirements of club members and casual users following the Games is currently being developed by Glasgow City Council and Glasgow Life.
Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive John Scott said: “Lawn Bowls is a fantastic sport which holds a very special place at the heart of the Commonwealth Games movement. This beautiful venue will provide our athletes with first class facilities in a great location, showcasing the best of Glasgow.”
Michael Cavanagh, Chair, Commonwealth Games Scotland said: “Lawn Bowls is a huge sport in Scotland and I know our bowlers will get a real buzz from competing in front of such a knowledgeable home crowd, against such a historic backdrop. We have a strong tradition of success in lawn bowls and I know that a home Games will make our bowlers even more determined to do well.”
This first phase is expected to be completed by early summer in 2011, with the entire project expected to be complete by summer 2012.
