SSE has customers and employees in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland and we are really looking forward to helping make these Games come alive for them and their communities.
“At SSE we take our work very seriously but try not to take ourselves too seriously and we’re aiming to make this sponsorship innovative and quirky, not boring and corporate. We’re already involved in sport in local communities through sponsorships of shinty, golf, cricket, football, sailing and rugby so we’re excited about the possibilities that lie ahead between SSE and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.”
Both SSE and Glasgow 2014 are keen to maximise the opportunities this partnership presents. Active discussions are on-going and plans for positive and interactive engagement across the UK will be launched soon.

Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) in conjunction with JudoScotland, Scottish Cycling and Scottish Disability Sport, has confirmed today the sports specific selection standards required for nomination to Team Scotland for the 2014 Commonwealth Games for the sports of judo and cycling. These are in addition to the criteria laid down in the General Selection Policy published in November 2011.
This means three sports have now agreed the sport specific standards required for athletes to put themselves in the frame for competing at Glasgow 2014.
In judo, the competition format for Glasgow 2014 consists of individual events, with the following weight categories:
Men: 60kg; 66Kg; 73Kg; 81Kg; 90Kg; 100Kg; +100Kg Women: 48kg; 52Kg; 57Kg; 63Kg; 70Kg; 78Kg; +78Kg
A maximum of two competitors per weight category can be entered with a maximum entry of 14 judo competitors, split seven men and seven women. For Judo the selection period will run from 1st May 2013 – 30th Apr 2014.
Welcoming the publication of the 2014 judo selection policy and standards, David Somerville, National High Performance Judo Coach said: “We are delighted that judo is back on the Games programme for the first time since 2002, and for the majority of JudoScotland athletes this publication signifies the start of their Commonwealth Games journey.
“I am pleased that JudoScotland and Commonwealth Games Scotland have been able to work together on this policy to ensure that it can be communicated at the earliest opportunity. I believe this allows our athletes to shape their preparations over the coming months, enabling them to achieve the highest selections standards possible and in turn convert this into positive results during the 2014 Commonwealth Games.”
In cycling the competition comprises track sprint and endurance events; road races and time trials and mountain bike cross country. The maximum number of athletes selected for each event will be three except the road race where it is six and men’s team pursuit, four.
Cycling.jpgWith the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome close to completion there is huge anticipation and excitement around the track cycling programme which for the first time will see the inclusion of para sport events including tandem track cycling events, in which Glasgow’s Aileen McGlynn is current Paralympic champion and along with Aberdonian Neil Fachie they are both World Championship medallists.
Graeme Herd, Scottish Cycling Head Performance Coach commented: “The 2014 Commonwealth Games presents very exciting opportunities for our athletes to not only represent Scotland but to compete in our home country, in the host city of Glasgow.
“The aim of this document is to ensure that Scottish Cycling and CGS select a team of athletes capable of competing with distinction at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Scottish Cycling’s performance team has already commenced training for the qualification period, beginning January 2013, which we anticipate will provide a competitive team for Glasgow 2014.”
The cycling selection period will run from 1 January 2013 – 15 May 2014.
Elinor Middlemiss, Games Team Operations Manager, who has been responsible for driving this area of Team Scotland preparations forward added: “I am delighted that the judo and cycling selection policies and standards have been published today. We are making good progress with nine other sports and I am confident that we will have all everything in place for all 17 sports by the end of the year which can only be good news for our athletes.”
The finalised selection policies and standards for judo and cycling are available to download at either www.cgcs.org.uk or www.judoscotland.org.uk and www.scottishcycling.org.uk
Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland, today welcomed the news from the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee that there will be a number of positive additions to the sports programme for 2014, on the back of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) sports review which reported last November.
The integrated para-sport programme has increased from 15 to 22 events across Athletics, Cycling, Lawn Bowls, Powerlifting and Swimming. These events include tandem track cycling events, in which Glasgow’s Aileen McGlynn is current Paralympic champion and along with Aberdonian Neil Fachie they are both World Championship medallists. There is also a welcome return for the triples Lawn Bowls event in which Scotland won gold in 2002.
Currently preparing for the London 2012 Paralympic Games, Aileen McGlynn commented: “This is great news that Glasgow 2014 has extended the range of opportunities for Para-Sports in general, but particularly with the inclusion of track cycling. For me to be able to compete in the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome in front of a home crowd in 2014 as part of a fully integrated Team Scotland would be a dream come true.”
There was also great news for Scotland’s double Commonwealth Games champion Jen McIntosh, with confirmation that the women’s shooting programme has been amended to make the number of events equitable with the men. Jen will now have the opportunity to defend the women’s smallbore prone title, she won in 2010 as well as the smallbore 3 position event.
A delighted Jen McIntosh said: “This is fantastic news. I was really disappointed when I heard that the women’s prone event might be removed from the programme and with it the chance to defend my title at a home Games. It is also good news for women’s sport as a whole that consideration is being given to gender equity.”
Triathlon is the other sport to benefit and four years earlier than they originally expected. Included by the CGF as an optional event for the 2018 Games and beyond, the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee has decided to include the exciting an innovative triathlon mixed team event for Glasgow.
Scottish podium programme triathlete, Ritchie Nicholls said: “We are really excited that triathlon is back in the programme for Glasgow 2014 and it has just got even better with news of the inclusion of the mixed team event. Anybody who watched the triathlon team event held in London last year knows just how exciting the team event is for participants and spectators alike and it will hopefully encourage more people to take part in this shorter version of the sport.”
Michael Cavanagh concluded: “These changes are great news for Team Scotland. We have been working very closely with the governing bodies, Glasgow 2014 and the Commonwealth Games Federation during their review to try and secure a number of positives outcomes for Scotland and today’s news is extremely welcome.
“We are particularly pleased for our female shooters, after five years of work on this issue. Jen McIntosh was our most successful female athlete in Delhi 2010 winning two gold and a bronze and I am delighted that she will now be able to defend both titles. We are also excited about the prospect of having more para-sports events in the programme and particularly welcome the inclusion of track cycling, where we have a number of talented athletes already competing at the highest level.”
A copy of the full medal event programme for Glasgow 2014 can be downloaded from the downloads section at the bottom left of this page.

“Just as we spend a significant amount of time and effort ensuring that the right athletes are selected for the team in the right events, we also recognise the importance of having the best possible staff to support them in the right positions. These staff appointments, and those that will follow, will focus on creating the right environment to give our athletes the best possible opportunity to excel at the Games.”

The 21st century tartan which will be a defining part of the fabric of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was revealed for the first time today (17 April 2012) to an excited audience of school pupils at Shawland’s Academy in Glasgow.
The school was chosen as the launch venue as a tribute to the tartan’s teenage designer Aamir Mehmood. Aamir, a 15-year-old Shawlands Academy pupil, beat thousands of young people from across Scotland with his winning design which was created using Glasgow 2014’s brand colours.
Pupils from more than 300 schools across Scotland entered the competition and Aamir’s design was chosen by a six-strong judging panel. His colourful plaid will now be seen by an audience of more than one billion people worldwide in the lead up to and during Glasgow 2014.
In addition to his tartan, Aamir shared the creative inspiration behind his design. He said he incorporated blue, yellow, white and red to represent Scotland’s national colours. In addition he used a green landscape to demonstrate the fact that 75% of Shawlands Academy is bilingual and around 50 different languages are spoken in his school, which is the most-ethnically diverse secondary school in Scotland.
As part of his entry he described the design as suggesting that “we should put all conflicts and rivalries aside and celebrate the games being held in Glasgow and Scotland, just as all the different nations will come together in celebration of the Commonwealth Games.”
Aamir said: “It’s an amazing feeling to know that my design is the official tartan for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. It will be seen all around the world and I’m so privileged and proud to be part of this huge sporting event coming to Glasgow and Scotland.”
It is anticipated that the tartan will be used in the lead up to and during Glasgow 2014 and feature in showcase moments such as the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, medal ceremonies, welcome ceremonies for Commonwealth Games Associations merchandise and gifting.
Michael Cavanagh, Chairman of Commonwealth Games Scotland and a member of the judging panel said: “It is fantastic that this new tartan has been created to help celebrate the Glasgow 2014 Games and as a member of the judging panel, what struck me most was the impressive cultural insight and creative thinking behind it. Many congratulations to Aamir and Shawlands Academy.”
With still over two years to go until the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, Commonwealth Games Scotland (CGS) in conjunction with scottishathletics and Scottish Disability Sport (SDS) has announced the athletics selection policy and standards required for nomination to Team Scotland. These are in addition to the criteria laid down in the General Selection Policy published in November 2011.
Athletics is the first sport to agree the sport specific standards required for men and women to put themselves in the frame for appearances at Glasgow 2014.
The qualification period opens for the marathon on 1 January 2013 and closes 48 hours after the 2014 London Marathon. In order to meet the criteria for selection, athletes must achieve a single qualifying standard within that period on a course complying with IAAF standards.
The qualification period for all other events opens on 1 April 2013, closing at midnight on 8 June 2014, and athletes must achieve the qualification standard on a minimum of two occasions in officially sanctioned events during that time. The exceptions to this are for multi-events, 10,000m, relays and wheelchair events, where only a single qualifying standard must be achieved in this period.
The maximum number of athletes per event is three. Where more than three athletes attain the qualification standard in an event, then head-to-head results and championship performances (Scottish National level and above) will be considered. All selections will be subject to proof of form and fitness.
Glasgow 2014 will also offer competition opportunities for elite athletes with a disability in the following pre-determined para-sports event categories:
Men Discus F42/44; Men 100m T37; Men 1500m T54
Women F37/38 Long Jump; Women 100m T12; Women 1500m T54
Jon Doig, Chief Executive Commonwealth Games Scotland said: “Following the publication of our General Selection Policy in November last year, we are delighted that we are making good progress with the development of sports specific selection standards for each of the 17 sports on the Games programme. Athletics is the first sport to complete the process and it is fantastic that athletes and coaches with the aspiration and potential to compete in Glasgow 2014 know at the earliest possible time exactly what they must do to make the team.
“Whilst the standards reflect the aim across all sports of athletes finishing in the top eight, based on performances at recent Commonwealth Games, these standards are specific to athletics, including taking into account the specific requirements of events such as the marathon and the short competition window for athletics in the summer of 2014.”
Nigel Holl, Chief Executive scottishathletics said: “The important thing is that we’ve collectively now laid down for athletes the selection policy and standards required ahead of Glasgow 2014 and given people as much time as possible to work towards those times and distances. ‘We have a full summer season ahead and then a winter before the period opens in April 2013 – so that’s good for coaches and athletes. Now that the standards have been agreed, we wish everyone well in seeking to achieve them. The support of CGS and SDS in getting to this point has been excellent”
The scottishathletics National Selectors will make their final nominations to CGS who will review and ratify the team by 11 June 2014. There are also two earlier nomination dates during the selection window, which enable athletes to secure places in the Team earlier (September 2013 and April 2014) and therefore have significant extra time to focus specifically on that event in 2014.
The detailed selection standards for athletics for the 2014 Commonwealth Games are available to download at either www.cgcs.org.uk or www.scottishathletics.org.uk .
The sport specific selection standards for all 17 sports will be published by 15 December 2012.
