James Heatly

Jen Leeming
Edinburgh Diving Club
James will compete at his third Commonwealth Games at Birmingham 2022, having taken bronze in the 1m Springboard event at Gold Coast 2018, Scotland's first Diving medal since James's grandfather, Sir Peter Heatly, won gold in the 10m Platform in 1958.

A World Junior Championships bronze medallist, James represented Team Scotland at Glasgow 2014 at age 17, finishing in the top 10 in both 1m and 3m Springboard. He went on to win gold in the 3m Springboard and silver in the Men's 3m Synchro at the inaugural European Games in Baku in 2015, also taking Mixed Synchro silver at the FINA World Series in London the same year. He also won bronze in Men's 3m Synchro at the 2017 European Championships.

Following his Gold Coast success, James has made a habit of winning major championship medals with back-to-back European Championships bronze medals in the 1m Springboard in Glasgow in 2018 and 3m Springboard a year later in Kiev. At the 2021 FINA Diving World Cup held in Japan as an official test event for the Tokyo Olympics, he won silver in the 3m Springboard and made his Olympic debut in Japan, 73 years after his grandfather competed at his first Olympics.

James grandfather, Sir Peter Heatly, was an Olympian and won five Commonwealth Games medals including three gold in consecutive Games in the 1950s. In December 2017, James equalled his grandfather 27 Scottish National titles as he won gold in the 1m, 3m and 10m events.
