Craig burst onto the scene in 2011, winning a silver medal at the European Junior Championships, gold and silver at the World Junior Championships and four medals at the Commonwealth Youth Games. His three gold and one silver in the Isle of Man saw him named Athlete of the Games and gave him the title of Scotland's most successful Youth Games athlete of all-time, a title he held until July 2017.

Craig was the youngest member of the Team GB swimming squad at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, where he made the semi-finals of the 100m Breaststroke. He went on to finish 4th in the same event at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games before taking bronze in both 100m and 200m Breaststroke at the 2015 World University Games. He competed in his second Olympic Games at Rio 2016. The 2018 Gold Coast was Craig's second time competing at the Commonwealth Games, where he went on to finish 6th in both the 100m & 200m breaststroke event he also finished 9th in the 50m breaststroke event.

In Birmingham 2022, Craig Benson comes in 9th place during heats and 7th place during semi-finals, and 6th with a time of 1:00.53 in the Men’s 100m Breaststroke finals.
