Billy Gilland represented Scotland at the 1978 Edmonton and 1986 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games. In the 1978 Games he won silver in the Mixed Doubles event with Joanna Flockhart before returning for the Edinburgh 1986 Games where he won gold alongside Dan Travers in the Men’s Doubles and bronze in the Mixed Doubles with Christine Heatly.

Billy won Mixed Doubles bronze at the inaugural IBF World Championships in 1977. He also won 12 consecutive Scottish national Mixed Doubles titles between 1976 and 1987 and took gold at the All England championships in 1985.

  • Billy's Men's Doubles win with Dan Travers in 1986 remains Scotland's only Badminton gold medal to date
