Birmingham 2022 will be Alan's fourth appearance at a Commonwealth Games, previously finishing 4th in Men's Doubles at Gold Coast 2018, Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014. On the hunt for that elusive medal in Gold Coast, he paired up with Greg Lobban, whom he had partnered to gold at the 2016 World Doubles Championships. The pair came up agonisingly short in the bronze medal match, giving Alan his third 4th place finish in as many Games. Alan also contested the Men's Singles where he reached the quarter-finals.

Alan was part of the first Scottish team for 17 years to take a European Team Championship medal in 2016 and added to his 2016 gold at the Word Doubles Championships with silver, also with Greg Lobban, in 2017 and bronze in April 2022 alongside Douglas Kempsall.
