There was lots of action for the Scottish basketball fans on Day 2 and a lot to celebrate as all three teams in action took at least one win.

The women’s running team started their campaign with a tough loss to Tonga 10-12. They returned in the afternoon session for a physical battle against the 2022 silver medallists England losing out 9-14.

They finished on a high with a convincing win against Singapore 21-15.

Kirsty Brown felt the home crowd gave them an extra boost and felt that they improved with each game. She said: “What an amazing atmosphere out there. The crowd definitely gave us a boost today. Pulling on the Scottish jersey was such a proud moment for me. I’ve got lots of family in Scotland so having their support and having the chance to play in front of them here is fantastic.”

They will be back in action on Monday with two games against Papua New Guinea then Wales.

The men’s wheelchair team played their first ever match in a Commonwealth Games and came out on top 15-9 against South Africa. They come back on Sunday evening to play Malaysia.

Tyler Baines said: “We had a nervous start in front of the home crowd so it took us a bit to get into it but we started ramping it up. We missed a few easy shots but we scored 15 points. By the end of it we were working well together. Hopefully we get going from the start in our next game against Malaysia tomorrow.”

The women’s wheelchair team swept Nigeria aside 15-1 in their opener and are feeling confident for their next match against India on Sunday evening.

17-year old Lea Smith said: “I am absolutely buzzing, I am still shaking. I could hear my twin sister and little sister shouting the whole way through.

“Robyn [Love] has put so much work into our team. She is always there supporting us and is a great mentor. We have a great partnership.

“We want to win, that is what we are here for. We want to progress with every game and see how far we can go.”
