July 30, 2024

Day 3 Round up

The battle for medals can come down to the finest of margins and Duncan Scott found himself in 4th in the 200m Freestyle final, just 0.15 of a second from winner David Popovici of Romania and just 0.08 from a medal.

Katie Shanahan acquitted herself well in her first Olympic final with 7th place in a 400m Individual Medley dominated by 17 year old Summer McIntosh of Canada.

Unfortunately Kathleen Dawson missed out in the heats of the Women’s 100m Backstroke, finishing 18th in 1.00.69. She’ll be back in relay action later in the week.

Charlie Aldridge finished in an impressive eighth on his Olympic debut in a Men’s Mountain Bike Cross Country race won by team mate Tom Pidcock.

At the badminton Kirsty Gilmour got off to a winning start against Keisha Fatimah Azzahra in the first round of the Women’s Singles group stages. A comfortable victory in straight sets.

In sailing Fynn Sterritt with teammate James Peters had a much better day in the 49er class after sitting in 13th place overall after a frustrating opening day. A sixth place was followed by a fifth and a fourth to rise up through the rankings to eighth overall with six races completed – the halfway point of their series.

Over at rowing, the Women’s Eight, with Scot Rowan McKellar, won their heat to progress to the final, as did Sholto Carnegie and the Men’s Eight who were five seconds clear of Australia in second.

Team GB’s Women’s Rugby 7s team, including Scot Lisa Thomson, scored a brilliant 26-17 victory against South Africa to make the quarter-finals. There they came up short against a strong USA side, ending their medal hopes.

The Women’s Hockey team, including Sarah Robertson, Amy Costello and Charlotte Watson, lost 4-0 to Australia. Their next match will be against South Africa on Wednesday.
