Scotland are preparing to welcome Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland from Friday for a three day, make-or-break competition to determine which two teams book their place in the 2027 Netball World Cup in Sydney, Australia.

Played every four years, the Scottish team are hungry to qualify and join hosts Australia, and the already qualified New Zealand, Jamaica, England, South Africa and Uganda, as one of the 16 teams who will contest netball’s premier international competition.

Scottish Thistle Iona Christian – who has 39 caps for her country – knows what an important moment this is for her team. Speaking to the Herald, she said: “The World Cup next year is where we want to be, and so we just need to make sure we don’t get complacent or take our foot off the pedal.”

“Two teams will qualify but we want to win all our games – and that’s what we’re planning on doing. With netball not being included in the Olympics, we really don’t want to miss out on a huge event like the World Cup.”

Scotland are looking to build on their best performance at the Commonwealth Games in the summer in Glasgow where they finished in 8th position, their best finish at a Games, and some impressive results along the way. Victories over Wales (56–47) and Trinidad & Tobago (77–27) – Scotland’s highest-ever Commonwealth Games score – were complemented by a thrilling 45–43 contest against eventual silver medallists Jamaica.

The 28-year-old continued: “To achieve our best-ever finish at a Commonwealth Games was pretty cool but I still think there’s a lot more to come from this team.

“We’ve got a very similar squad for World Cup qualifiers so I think that stands us in really good stead to build upon Glasgow and in the past few weeks, we’ve been honing our style to make sure we put out even better performances next weekend than we did a few weeks ago in Glasgow.”

There’s still time to get your tickets and support the Scottish Thistles at the Playsport Arena in East Kilbride. Tickets for all three matches are on sale now and you can secure your spot here.

All six games will also be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and via the BBC Sport website and app.
