Day three at Glasgow 2026 started with a massive 56-47 win for Team Scotland’s netballers over Wales. This was a match they had targeted as crucial to their tournament hopes and they delivered in front of a full house at the Hydro.
Scotland started the match with intent and quickly established a solid lead. Hannah Grant and Emily Nicholl were instrumental in mopping up any danger, while Iona Christian and Hannah Leighton were connecting well with Emma Barrie, who responded with goals that saw Scotland surge into a 16-8 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
Wales began to creep back into the contest in the second quarter, but Christian was influential, buzzing around the court to keep Scotland ticking over. By the end of the half Scotland enjoyed a seven goal lead at 28-21.
In the third quarter Niamh McCall caused Wales no end of problems as the Scots added goals to their tally. It was a ten goal advantage at the end of the third with the score at 43-33, and the Scots looking strong.
The final quarter saw Wales come out swinging, but the goal scoring of McCall and industry of Leighton kept Scotland out of touching distance, and clock up an excellent 56-47 victory.
Iona Christian said: “Absolutely buzzing. This was a big one for us, there’s a lot of history between Scotland and Wales and we knew they were going to absolutely bring it to us today and we knew we were going to have to play our best to get over the line against them. Every single one of the girls stepped up today to get that win.
“I think that’s probably the best score that we’ve had against Wales for a long, long time. To really put our foot down in quarter one was huge for us today and it really set us in good stead for the rest of the game.
“Another big game tomorrow. We need to win that one if we’re going to finish where we want to finish at the end of this competition. It’s not quite as tight a turn-a-round but all the focus is on tomorrow now.”
Scotland now face Trinidad and Tobago on Monday evening in another vital match as the group stage continues.
