After topping their group and advancing straight to the semi-finals, Robyn Love, player and coach of the women’s wheelchair basketball team shared her thoughts on her team and what they’ve been able to achieve in a short space of time.

“I am the coach, I am the player, there’s pressure,” she said. But the girls are taking it on and every game we are adding little bits. They are listening and they are executing and there’s no prouder moment as their coach seeing it working on the floor.

“We’ve had 10 days together in preparation for this so it’s absolutely incredible what they’ve been able to achieve. There are no egos, it’s all teamwork. And that is what we are all about – building those little moments. We’ve got a little Loch Ness monster as we are in that ‘locked-in’ mentality and that brings us all together as a group.”

With a rest day on Tuesday, Robyn got some time to enjoy her other important role, as mummy to her three-year-old daughter Alba.

“My little girl is here in the stands. Last time I was at a Commonwealth Games, in 2022, we found out that Laurie [Williams] was pregnant at the Games and now I am wearing number three on my jersey because our daughter is three years old. Every time she sees it she says,‘three like me’. We will have a special day and enjoy this full circle moment for us as a family.”

Managing to perform for her country and be there for her family is a real juggle but that too is all about teamwork.

“My partner of 11 years Laurie, who is also on the GB program, we do it together. Honestly, we are the perfect team on and off the court. I manage it because she is there and she is incredible. 

“Laurie came back to GB squad two months after giving birth and Alba has been part of it all ever since. At that competition she was in our room, she joined team meetings, video meetings and she was the emotional support for the team. That tournament was the best I’ve ever played because I was myself and had my little girl. She sleeps through the night which helps a lot too!”

Alba and Laurie will be cheering on Robyn and the rest of the team from the stands on Wednesday hoping, like the rest of us, that they can keep their winning streak going to drive onto medal glory.
