Angharad Evans delivered a stunning debut Commonwealth medal in front of a raucous Tollcross home crowd.

Turning behind South African rival Aimee Canny, Angharad scrapped her way back in front, to take gold in front of adoring Scottish swimming fans.

Elated with her performance she said: “I could absolutely hear the crowd but weirdly enough, in that last 50m I thought I was more nervous walking out than I was in the race. During the race, I was really calm and I trusted my stroke and I knew if she was there next to me and for some reason I’m just good at getting my hands on the wall fast so I, weirdly enough wasn’t too stressed about that, it was more the waiting game and when I walked out and heard the crowd, it really helped me.”

When asked about her parents being in the crowd, she added: “It means absolutely everything. I wouldn’t be here without them and I often thank them for having to watch me, and they thank me for swimming. They are my rock, they are my foundation and I wouldn’t be the swimmer I am without them; I wouldn’t be the person I am without them. They’ve seen my highs, my lows, everything – and to have them here to see my first international medal long course is a really special moment. They knew how nervous I was leading up to it and my mum was probably more nervous than me so I’m sure I’ll be emotional seeing them after that race.”

The Men’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay of George Smith, Matthew Ward, Evan Jones and Duncan Scott narrowly missed out on a 6th successive medal in the event – with Wales rounding out a podium topped by Australia and England.

Reflecting on the race Matthew Ward said: “That was an unbelievable race. We knew we were all going to have to lay our bodies out on the line, give it the best effort we had and use the crowd as much as possible. We gave it everything, and it would have been the absolute cherry on top of the cake to have been on the podium, but it was unbelievable being able to walk out with those boys. It wasn’t the result we wanted but we’ll be back stronger. You know, we are a young team and even in the future we may not have Duncan, I think this is great experience for us all going forward.”

The team also thanked Charlie Hutchison and Luke Hornsey, who swam the morning heat alongside Ward and Smith to put the team in the final.

In the night’s other finals Sam Downie took 5th in the Men’s S9 100m Backstroke there was a 7th place for Toni Shaw in the Women’s S9 100m Backstroke, while Katie Shanahan placed 6th in the Women’s 100m Backstroke.

Archie Goodburn will go in his first ever Commonwealth final on Monday after placing 7th in the semi final of the 50m Breaststroke. In the Women’s 100m Butterfly final there will be 3 Scots in medal contention with Keanna MacInnes, Ciara Schlosshan and Lucy Grieve all raked inside the top 6 heading into Monday’s showdown.

Also in action will be Duncan Scott in the 200m Butterfly, looking to add to his 14 Commonwealth medals, whilst Evie Davis looks in fine form heading into the 100m Freestyle final.
