Melbourne 2006

This was the fifth Games that Australia had hosted and the first time since 1982. These were the biggest Games yet, run on an almost Olympic scale and the challenge of meeting the Commonwealth’s dominant country on home soil had if anything got harder.

Scotland’s athletes did themselves proud winning a total of 29 medals (11 gold, 7 silver 11 bronze) and recording their most successful Games ever. Their achievements inspired a nation with a huge public welcome on their return home and a number of awards and accolades being quite rightly bestowed on the Team and individuals alike.

Top Athlete: Swimmer Gregor Tait claimed two gold (200m Backstroke and 200m Individual Medley) and two bronze (100m Backstroke and 4x100m Medley Relay), bringing his total Commonwealth Games medal haul to five following a bronze in the 200m Backstroke at Manchester 2002.

In the Women’s 50m Prone Pairs, Sheena teamed up with Susan Jackson to go one better than the silver they won in 2002, adding a second gold in the individual event.
