Team Scotland’s female gymnastics team fought to a brave 6th place in the Women’s Team Event, overcoming a shaky start to leave the competition with smiles on their faces.

Leading the team off was Ellee Cheetham on Uneven Bars, a nice clean routine the perfect start. Lottie Smith showcased some lovely acrobatics skills on Beam but a number of errors across the quartet left them with work to do.

On the floor Ava MacFarlane put together a beautiful performance, before Crystelle Lake produced, what at that point was the top score of the day. Last but not least came the Vault, with Cheetham and Lake both stepping up when it mattered most to propel Scotland into second place after the third of four sub-divisions.

As well as a sixth position in the Team Event, both Crystelle Lake and Ellee Cheetham did enough to progress to Sunday’s All Around final, joining their male compatriots Reuben Ward and Cameron Lynn.

Speaking post-competition, Cheetham said:

“That atmosphere! When we did the run through I tried to envisage the crowd, but coming out here for a home Games today is something I can’t put into words. They brought the energy, and it really lifted us up when we had some difficult moments. Coming out of the competition with smiles on our faces – we couldn’t have asked for any more.

“I didn’t put any pressure on this competition coming in, I just wanted to go out and enjoy it like I did at the Scottish Championships a few months ago, as I’ve not been back in the sport that long. I’m so proud to make the All Around final.”
