A surprise bronze medal for Angus Doig started a busy day for Team Scotland at the Armadillo – the first medal in weightlifting since the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Still taking in his performance Doig said: “I came here for a good day and this has been a great day!”

Aiming for a fifth place finish, the snatch didn’t quite go his way with only his first lift of 135kg being successful.

Moving onto the clean & jerk he started strongly at 165kg, and moved up to 170kg successfully in his second attempt. 174kg went on the bar for his third attempt and the home crowd went wild when it was announced as another good lift.

As he waited back stage he was in bronze medal position but there were two hotly tipped lifters still to go who needed just one successful lift each to nudge him out of the medals. Angus kept himself busy by going to do some media interviews, never expecting that the unimaginable was about to happen. Three failed attempts for them both and as the bar dropped too quickly on the last lift, Doig heard it from behind the curtain and the spectators realised what it meant for the final standings and erupted in pure joy.

He said: “I did all the interviews, went back in and my coach told me I was in with I shot. I heard the bar drop, the coaches started cheering and I realised what had happened. I wanted to come here and put on a good performance and a show for the crowd and I definitely did that. I just can’t believe this has happened. I am the first medal in 16 years – just amazing and I am so grateful to all my family and friends for their incredible support.”

Malaysia took the gold, New Zealand the silver and for Scotland it was a first medal in weightlifting since the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
